Elastic Water, but can you drink it?



Think Silly Putty, and you'll probably have a very good idea what the brains at Japan's Tokyo University have created. 

The new material, called "elastic water," retains its Flubber-like consistency by mixing a few grams of clay and organic matter to H20, essentially binding the whole into a jelly-like putty.

Eco Cars: Car Of The Future Gets Propelled By Electromagnetic Wheels

Working to design cars for the future, Indian auto designer Nanish K R has come up with a car design aimed to revolutionize transport in the year 2020. The simple, yet stylish car is powered by four independent electromagnetic wheels, which allows the car to do without a conventional powertrain.

The wheels of this zero-emission car are made up of two sliding rings, one of which is the electromagnet and the other is a permanent one. The electromagnet gets powered by the lithium-ion batteries installed on the vehicle’s chassis and gets the same polarity as the permanent magnet. This creates a repulsive force between the rings which is then converted into motion.

The Robot Revolution: Driverless Trucks and Voice Activated Pets

This is a fascinating page featuring new robotic products. What caught my eye, was the robotic transport systems. The development of these new products indicates that private industry is gearing up and planning for the wide spread use of "smart dust". With smart dust in pavement and other surfaces, these robotic vehicles could bring a major reduction in traffic accidents and fatalities.

First Garden on the Moon by 2012!

"Groundbreaking advancements in the realm of space engineering may soon see the moon sown with the first gardens to grow on the lunar surface. As part of the Google Lunar X Prize, Paragon Space Development Corporation has recently teamed with Odyssey Moon to develop a pressurized mini greenhouse to deploy on the surface of the moon, grow a plant from seed, and hopefully see it flower and seed itself. It’s a complicated endeavor, but it marks a critical stage of development for extending life beyond the confines of our planet."

LAVA's Vision for Abu Dhabi's Sustainalbe Masdar City Center

With so much concern being expressed about global warming, we are now starting to see great strides in the development of sustainable "eco-systems" so to speak, where we may survive the anticipated climate changes.

When complete, Masdar City will house 40,000 residents, 50,000 commuters, and over 1,500 companies. The companies involved, including materials companies, solar technology firms, fashion labels, will all be sustainability-minded. Masdar will also host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

Solar Panels Built Into Roads Could Be The Future of Energy

The Department of Energy just gave $100,000 to upstart company Solar Roadways, to develop 12-by-12-foot solar panels, dubbed "Solar Roads," that can be embedded into roads, pumping power into the grid. The panels may also feature LED road warnings and built-in heating elements that could prevent roads from freezing.

Sun Shades Cool Parking Lots, Pump Out Solar Energy

Add up all the asphalt parking lots surrounding the nation’s malls, offices and commuter hubs, and there’s more than enough blacktop to pave over Connecticut. Envision Solar International hopes to tranform those barren expanses into green-energy oases by erecting forests of “solar trees”. About 12 feet tall, each “tree” is capped with a 1,000 sq-ft canopy covered in solar cells.
Already installed or being built in a handful of California parking areas, Envision’s high-tech sun shades not only make the lots cooler and more comfortable, they generate clean power during daylight hours when it’s most needed. When “planted” in the parking lot of a typical regional shopping mall, a grove of the square-shaped shades can generate up to half a megawatt, enough to power 500 homes.

Hydrogen Cars Closer to Reality with New Storage System


New Delhi: Hydrogen run cars may soon be a reality for people. The researchers have developed such a system that will make it possible to fill vehicles fuel tank within a few minutes with enough hydrogen to drive 300 miles.

The system uses a fine powder called metal hydride to absorb hydrogen gas. The system's heat exchanger will circulate coolant through tubes and will use fins to remove heat generated as the hydrogen is absorbed by the powder. According to Issam Mudawar, a professor of mechanical engineering who is leading the research the system, overheating stops the absorption of heat successfully.

British engineers have developed a new environmentally friendly cement that is carbon-negative.


Cement, a vast source of planet-warming carbon dioxide, could be transformed into a means of stripping the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere, thanks to an innovation from British engineers.

A Drug That Could Give You Perfect Visual Memory

Imagine if you could look at something once and remember it forever. You would never have to ask for directions again. Now a group of scientists has isolated a protein that mega-boosts your ability to remember what you see.
A group of Spanish researchers reported today in Science that they may have stumbled upon a substance that could become the ultimate memory-enhancer. The group was studying a poorly-understood region of the visual cortex. They found that if they boosted production of a protein called RGS-14 (pictured) in that area of the visual cortex in mice, it dramatically affected the animals' ability to remember objects they had seen.

UCSD Chemists Develop 'Smart Dust'

Published August 25, 2003, nonetheless, this is very interesting! The image shows smart dust particles surrounded by a drop of hydrophobic liquid in water.
"To create the smart dust, the researchers use chemicals to etch one side of a silicon chip, similar to the chips used in computers, generating a colored mirrored surface with tiny pores. They make this porous surface water repellent, or hydrophobic, by allowing a chemical that is hydrophobic to bind to it. They then etch the other side of the chip to create a porous reflective surface of a different color and expose the surface to air so that it becomes hydrophilic, or attractive to water.

Lower Cost Solar Cells To Be Printed Like Newspaper,,,,,,

Solar cells could soon be produced more cheaply using nanoparticle "inks" that allow them to be printed like newspaper or painted onto the sides of buildings or rooftops to absorb electricity-producing sunlight.

Brian Korgel, a University of Texas at Austin chemical engineer, is hoping to cut costs to one-tenth of their current price by replacing the standard manufacturing process for solar cells - gas-phase deposition in a vacuum chamber, which requires high temperatures and is relatively expensive....click on the image to see the complete story.
